We’re just going to put it out there – we didn’t expect The Scarlet Singapore to be one of the most gorgeous and luxurious boutique hotels that we’ve visited in Singapore. In fact, the striking red facade barely prepared us for the magic we witnessed once we entered the hotel; we could not help but exclaim in awe at the opulent furnishings and grand sparkling chandelier!
Eclectic lounge chairs adorned different corners of the lobby, giving us a sneak peek into the indulgent experience that lay in store. The luxurious velvet upholstering not only made us feel like royalty, but also made the chairs an absolute delight to relax on.
Spanning across a row of shophouses dating all the way back to 1868, The Scarlet Singapore boasts a special layout like no other. The hotel houses five exclusively personalized suites, aptly named Swank, Opulent, Lavish, Splendour, and Passion. In addition, this 80-room hotel is conveniently located in the middle of Chinatown -Singapore’s iconic historical enclave, Tanjong Pagar, and the Central Business District. Nestled amidst boutique spas, creative advertising agencies, quaint restaurants and cafes, wine bars, specialty shops, art galleries and more – we simply couldn’t wait to start exploring!
The Scarlet Singapore’s most luxurious and romantic offering comes in the form of the Passion Suite, which has everything (and more!) that you could ever dream of for a perfect stay. Bold and sensuous shades of scarlet and black drape every corner of the room, creating the ideal setting for couples. The unique patterns on the walls were painstakingly crafted using six layers of embossed printing, creating a splendid backdrop which perfectly complements the seductive ambience.
The suite had a gorgeous sofa bed for us to relax on, and is filled with quirky leopard-print furniture. Why, looking into the lavish gold mirrors on the walls made us feel as if we were residing in a regal castle! Even the toilet is comfortably spacious enough for two – each person has an individual mirror and sink, which is something you don’t often find in other hotel toilets.
The suite also boasts a private terrace that comes fitted with an outdoor jacuzzi and plush cabanas for ultimate indulgence. We chose to have a relaxing soak while sipping on a glass of wine, and watched as the horizon became aglow with bright amber hues from the sunset. It doesn’t get any better than this! We had a truly difficult time tearing ourselves away from the comforts of this sultry suite when it was time to leave.
Just as its name suggests, the Swank Suite is a cool mix of modern chic and elegance. From a velvet multicoloured sofa to a decadent mirror-paneled headboard and silver framed art pieces... this contemporary and sophisticated suite is like a dream come true! The suite also offers two television sets, allowing us to watch our favourite programs from either the sofa or the bed. Rather perfect for a chill night in, we say!
The draping gold-rimmed turquoise curtains also add a certain regal flair to the ambience of the suite. We were hardly able to contain ourselves from snapping photos of every corner – the entire suite is totally Insta-worthy!
The best part? You even get a spacious balcony area that’s perfect for alfresco dining or even a suntanning session. It also offers a unique vantage point of Erskine Road and Kadayanallur Street.
We had a fun time people-watching and soaking in the warmth of the sun’s rays in the afternoon. When night fell, the balcony also became a cosy alcove for us to curl up with a good book and a refreshing cider.
The most eye-catching feature of the Splendour Suite was undeniably the multicoloured curtains. The curtains are whimsical and vibrant, and add a distinctive cheer to the entire room. Interestingly, the bright green hues from the headboard also perfectly complement the curtains’ psychedelic colours.
Another feature of the suite that we adored was none other than this fancy daybed! Royally robed in Christian Lacroix fabric and accented with gold trimmings, this daybed was irresistibly enticing. Relax in comfort and style with a magazine in hand – ah, that is the LIFE. Can we bring one back home, pretty please?
You’re also bound to spend copious amounts of time in the bathroom, which has both a huge bathtub and a standing shower. The bathtub is THE place to simply destress and rejuvenate amidst soap bubbles and hot water – we tipped in a bottle of scented bath salts (that came with the room, thank you very much), and we were all set.
With a suite as opulent as this, you wouldn’t want to leave at all! With plush velvet draperies, furniture decked out in royal purple tones, a grandiose mirror that seems as if it came straight out of a Disney movie, as well as a magnificent headboard that resembles the sun… Staying here for a night is enough to fulfill all your royal fantasies.
The deep cobalt hues of the headboard and curtains add a pop of colour when contrasted with the bright yellow walls. The centrepiece of the suite though, is none other than the Hästens bed.
The bed is the first of its kind in Asia, and valued at a whopping S$38,500. You’re definitely in for a good night’s sleep!
The Premium Room comes with an immaculate black velvet headboard, as well as bright gold draperies that instill a sense of elegance. A favourite amenity of ours were the comfy bedroom slippers that came emblazoned with the hotel’s signature shade of red. They were incredibly soft and comfortable – we almost left the room while wearing them!
Similar to the Executive Room, this charming and chic room comes with an exclusive balcony as well.
We love the outdoors, so the balcony was a charming feature that allowed us to soak in the warmth whilst lounging on the armchairs.
The interior of the Executive Room just screams GOLD. Could the headboard be any fancier? Every room comes with a complimentary Handy smartphone, which comes stocked with lots of dining or activity suggestions. Despite the lack of eclectic furniture, the room offers a cosy nook for those looking to have a good rest.
If you choose to stay in a Deluxe Room, you might be lucky enough to get a room with skylight windows on the ceiling!
Spend the night stargazing from the comforts of your own room, or be gently woken up by the sunrays in the morning. It’s also slightly bigger than the Standard Room.
Despite being the smallest and most basic room available at The Scarlet Singapore, the Standard Room offers a relaxing ambience that will help to soothe your senses.
Decked out in a warm colour palette, the distinctively pink headboard adds a harmonious blend to the welcoming vibe of the room. We didn’t get a chance to check this room out during our stay, but it certainly seems like a great fuss-free option!
Creatively and aptly named, ‘Soda’ is an outdoor jacuzzi at The Scarlet Singapore where you can soak in bliss and let all your worries dissipate as you indulge in a relaxing good time! You don’t come by an outdoor jacuzzi in Singapore often, so go ahead and pamper yourself for as long as you like.
Alternatively, you could just lounge on the sunbeds while sipping on a refreshing can of SODA!
For all you fitness buffs out there, you’ll be glad to learn that there’s also a small gym within the hotel! It’s open from 6am to 10pm daily, which suits the needs of both the early risers and night owls. With treadmills, weight machines, cardio equipment, and more, there was no reason for us to skip our workout after an entire day of guilty feasting! True to its name, the gym was there to help us FLAUNT our curves and muscles with confidence everywhere we went. *winks*
This meeting room might just be one of the most plush and stylish meeting rooms we’ve ever stepped into. With distinctive furniture and carpeting decked out in bold fuchsia accents as well as coral undertones, it certainly deserves its unique name. The meeting room also functions as a library of sorts, and we were delighted to find that we were able to walk in anytime to peruse a wide selection of magazines and books!
Located on the rooftop of the hotel, Aria is a quaint and charming place ideal for chilling after a long day! Bond with your loved ones over heartfelt conversations and drinks, along with a breathtaking view of Chinatown and the Central Business District. We could choose from a wide variety of authentic Sicilian dishes, as well as an array of cocktails, wines and non-alcoholic drinks – we were pretty much spoilt for choice.
With lovely fairy lights creating a cozy ambience, plush sofa seats and its location just steps away from your room – it doesn’t get any better than this!
Situated on the first floor of the hotel, Casa Tartufo is an authentic Southern Italian restaurant specialising in a truffle menu all year round. Just imagine that! The warm and sophisticated Italian decor – from the chic chandeliers to characteristic wooden chairs and soft lighting – makes you feel as if you’ve entered the beautiful and welcoming home of an Italian friend.
Casa Tartufo is also the location where you’ll get to enjoy your breakfast! We were pleasantly surprised at the sumptuous spread, which includes crispy bacon slices, juicy grilled tomatoes, roasted potatoes, sauteed mushrooms and more.
The best part? They even provide homemade cakes and yoghurt on top of it all! We particularly loved the homemade cakes; they were soft and moist with a strong chocolate flavour. We just couldn’t stop ourselves from having 3 pieces each! In true Italian style, you also get a selection of cheeses for breakfast, and the chefs willingly cook whip up eggs in any style you prefer on the spot! Needless to say, we had a very satisfying breakfast.
We entered our room and found.... A nifty little back-scratcher lying delicately on the bed. Paired with a quote that says, “Mmm… let me caress your back tonight”, this will sure come in handy for couples looking to give each other a good back massage! Call it novelty, but this welcome gift definitely upped the interesting factor of our staycation.
Note: This is only available for stays in the Premium Room and Suites – all the more reason to stay in one of those!
Spanning across 13 shophouses, the unique layout of The Scarlet Singapore is truly like no other. We found the long corridor on the second floor of the hotel to be an ideal place for a fashion show – the corridor stretches from one end to the other, and is complete with a red carpet and neon lighting. Model fantasies, anyone?
Club Street, located next to The Scarlet Singapore, is home to unique restaurants, snazzy bars, and boutique shops. It is even more vibrant and bustling at night, as many head for a relaxing and chill meetup with friends over cocktails and beers. The large crowds often spill over into the streets, making it dangerous for pedestrians as well as vehicle owners. Hence, Club Street is closed off to cars on the weekend, allowing you to party as hard as you want without having to worry about the constant stream of cars passing by! How awesome is that?
They are closed on Fridays to Saturdays from 7pm to 2am, hence allowing alfresco dining along the streets! You’ll feel as if you’re dining in a Parisian town square – with chairs and tables on the streets and fairy lights creating that romantic and idyllic setting. The infectious energy from the crowds evidently reveal the popularity of this quaint and charming street!
Conveniently located right opposite The Scarlet Singapore, the URA City Gallery is a hidden gem that remains unknown to many Singaporeans! You’ll also be delighted to know that there’s no entry fee – it’s completely free so go ahead and explore to your heart’s desire. The gallery brought us down memory lane with its showcase of Singapore’s physical transformations over the past 50 years.
We had fun with the experiential exhibits and even got to snap a photo with the miniature replica of Singapore! The masterpiece by Stephen Wiltshire is also displayed at the gallery, where he sketched an aerial view of Singapore’s skyline from memory after an hour-long helicopter ride.
Just a short 5-minute stroll from The Scarlet Singapore, Tong Heng Confectionery is renowned for its traditional pastries and most of all… its EGG TARTS! They come in unique diamond shapes, filled with velvety smooth custard and a crumbly exterior.
Every single bite you take will leave you wanting more! Take it from us – these egg tarts literally melt in your mouth. Aside from the pastries, you can also treat yourself to old school desserts like steamed egg or longan with orange and ginger.
The heritage heart of Singapore – Chinatown – is just a short 5 minute walk away from The Scarlet Singapore. Visit the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, Sri Mariamman Temple or the Jamae Mosque for an immersive experience, and gain insights on the various religions in Singapore. Foodies like us can head straight to the Chinatown Food Street for a feast of quintessential local delights.
A unique mix of the old and the new, here at Chinatown you’ll discover medicinal halls, traditional tea houses, and family-run goldsmiths juxtaposed against hipster cafes and lifestyle shops. Definitely worth a visit!
Make a stop at the Chinatown Heritage Centre as well, where you’ll get to trace the steps of Singapore’s early pioneers and gain a glimpse into the origins of the Chinatown community and enclave. The personal life stories of these immigrants, who left their hometown for a better life here, will touch your heart as you witness their struggles and sacrifices. Did you know that there’s also a TinTin shop right here in Chinatown? For fans of this comic character, you’ll be tempted to splurge on all sorts of merchandise available in this store! Ranging from books, to posters, t-shirts, and more, you’ll be spoilt for choice.
You’ll never go hungry during your staycation at The Scarlet Singapore. Why? The hotel is in a prime location, and is close proximity to a whole assortment of dining choices! Our favourite – Maxwell Food Centre – is located just opposite the hotel, offering delicious local delicacies at really affordable prices.
Feast on the famous Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice, or a plate of refreshingly spicy sambal stingray.
The Red Dot Museum, located just a short 5 minute walk away from The Scarlet Singapore, is home to eclectic art exhibitions where you can enhance your cultural capital. In addition, it regularly hosts fleas with vendors selling all sorts of quirky handicrafts or intricate jewellery! You’re bound to end up finding something you love after shopping around. The Market Of Artists And Designers (MAAD), the largest monthly creative market in asia is also held there so head on down and take a look!
In addition, the Tanjong Pagar area nearby is also home to many renowned Japanese and Korean restaurants! Indulge in a sinful Korean barbeque meal at Todamgol, or a bowl of delightfully crispy tempura don at Tendon Ginza Itsuki. We had a delicious bowl of freshly grilled unagi that just melted in our mouths, and ended our day with desserts at 5 The Moments! Mmm... what a perfect conclusion to our awesome staycation.
