With so many of us working remotely this year, a long holiday seems inviting, doesn’t it? Why not package working remotely and a holiday together! This decision was announced by the government on 23 Oct 2020 to persuade visitors to head to Mauritius for long stays.

The global travel restrictions following the outbreak of COVID-19 severely impacted the country’s tourism sector. The introduction of the Premium Visa, if successful, can largely help revive travel and tourism in Mauritius.

Who is eligible for the Premium Visa?

The Premium Visa is an opportunity for the Mauritian tourism sector to come up with packages to attract potential visitors. The visitors could range from long-stay tourists to year-round digital nomads and those presently working remotely.

There are certain eligibility conditions for the Premium Visa for those wishing to travel to Mauritius. Only travellers from the countries listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Passport Regulations are eligible for the Premium Visa. Those travelling have to be tourists, retirees, or professionals looking to move with their families to carry out work remotely from Mauritius.

Furthermore, in order to qualify for the Premium Visa, visitors must provide proof of their long stay plans and travel and health insurance for the initial period of stay. They must also not enter the Mauritius Labour Market upon arrival and their main source of income should be outside Mauritius. Additionally, they must provide documentary evidence on the purpose of their visit and accommodation details, as well as fulfill all other immigration requirements.
