If you’re craving for an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, simply head to the adjacent conservation heritage area in Tanjong Pagar! Enter a brand new world at The Scarlet Singapore, a nostalgic respite surrounded by an eclectic range of wine bars and contemporary cafés. Boasting 80 intricately decorated rooms, the hotel was perfect for us to unwind at after a long week of work!
The Scarlet Singapore offers a breath of fresh air from the usual skyscrapers, comprising a well-preserved row of 13 shophouses that were established way back in 1968. The shophouses lead to a grandiose yet cosy lobby, adorned by a sparkling polished chandelier and a grand staircase. One of the fancier boutique hotels in Singapore, indeed.
Each room also has a Handy phone, which offers unlimited international calls to 8 countries (Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, United Kingdom and United States), unlimited local calls as well as unlimited 3G mobile internet access. So you don’t have to worry about staying connected at all.
We were looking for a way to spice up the usual dinner-and-movie date, and found a staycation at The Scarlet Singapore to be just the thing! And if you need any more convincing, the Scarlet Singapore has even won a couple of awards – “Best Boutique Hotels, DestinAsian Readers’ Choice Awards 2018” and “Top 10 Value for Money Hotels, TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice 2018”. Trust us when we say that you’ll be in for a fantastic stay!
Saunter into The Scarlet Singapore’s most intoxicating suite. The exquisite black satin drapes, paired with the walls’ alluring scarlet print, bring out a flirtatious feel. Embellished with theatrical furnishings, the cosy and captivating ambience is perfect for bringing out the mood.
The complimentary mini-bar is a very nice touch; we could snack on them without worrying about exorbitant price tags. A plush lounge chair sits invitingly at a corner, which is ideal for stretching out on. To make things even better, there are two elegant gold mirrors and sinks in the capacious bathroom, a.k.a. one for each person. We loved not having to take turns!
And the best part? An exclusive patio attached to the suite! The patio contains an outdoor jacuzzi and a comfortable cabana peppered with fluffy pillows. We indulged in a long soak with a glass of wine in our hands – the perfect way to end the day.
We opened the door and were greeted with vibrant kaleidoscopic curtains! Take tons of Insta-worthy shots with the curtains as your backdrop – we know we did. Just picture this scene: both of you reclining on the sophisticated fuchsia chaise lounge with your favourite book or cup of tea. Isn’t that scene lovely? Besides that, the bathroom also comes with both a standing shower and bathtub – so take your pick!
Fun fact: the Hästens bed (which costs a whopping S$38,000!) in the Lavish Suite is filled with wool, flax, pine and horsehair! Needless to say, it’s extremely soft to the touch. Apart from the bed, the suite is also furnished with a cobalt blue sofa and a bright red lounge to relax on. What a pity that we only had a short while to enjoy the room during our visit. We’ll be back for sure!
Stepping into the Opulent Suite felt like stepping straight into the 16th century, topped off with amethyst walls adorned by a majestic baroque mirror. The accents of purple and gold will make any visitor feel like instant royalty.
The Swank Suite is a mix of bold yet contemporary colours that just scream ‘Vogue!’ from every corner. Enjoy the best of both worlds – a laidback and chill vibe in the room or experience a pumped up vibe on the spacious balcony. The balcony offers a panoramic view of Erskine Road and Kadayanallur Street, allowing us to gaze down on a constant hub of activity.
The Premium Room comes decked out in warm shades of apricot. The intricate floral headboard adds an elaborate flair to the overall decor, accentuated by the colourful curtain drapes. The best part? The well-polished bathroom comes with a bathtub, which is perfect for a revitalising bubble bath!
Executive Room ⁄ Executive Room with Balcony
Painted with a refined tint of gold, the Executive Room is warm and cosy. If you’re looking for more space, opt for the option with a balcony. We loved how the balcony allowed us to cuddle up with our other half or simply revel in the simple pleasures of reading a good book with a cuppa in our hands.
The walls of the Deluxe Room come in a soothing shade of blue, offering an inexplicably calming sensation to all who step through its doors. If you’re lucky, you might even be able to get a room with skylight windows on the ceiling! Due to the architecture of the shophouse buildings, this unique feature is something you don’t often come across.
If you’re looking for a basic room that comes with all the creature comforts you need, look no further than the Standard Room! The room is adorned with vibrant hues, illuminated by elegant side table lamps and a dimmed ambient lighting bathroom. It has everything that’s required for a relaxing stay!
Looking for a taste of Italy? Alex and Tammy, the owners of Casa Tartufo, bring that right to our shores. Casa Tartufo is The Scarlet Singapore’s in-house Italian restaurant, which serves up incredibly authentic fare. Do try their exquisite truffle specialities (including truffle ice cream!), accompanied by a bottle of red wine. Revel in the restaurant’s rustic atmosphere whilst seated in distinctive wooden chairs alongside muted warm lamps.
We had our breakfast here, which comprised smoked salmon, juicy cherry tomatoes, crispy bacon slices, assorted cheese and more. P.S. The homemade cakes are a must-try! What could be a better way to start your day than with a hearty breakfast?
Aria is a cosy rooftop bar that offers panoramic sunset views. We indulged in a range of authentic Sicilian street snacks and craft cocktails whilst watching the sky light up in hues of orange and red. We were delighted to find out that Aria’s craft cocktails come mixed with herbs freshly grown from their own garden. What a nice touch! Add mesmerising fairy lights and a relaxing Mediterranean ambience and we had the recipe for a beautiful night out with our loved one.
After feasting both in our room (think: complimentary mini-bar) and at Casa Tartufo, we simply had to work off our guilt! Thankfully, we could head to FLAUNT, the hotel’s gym, and work off all those calories with their range of treadmills and weighted equipment. The gym is open from 6am all the way to 10pm at night, so feel free to work up a sweat whenever you want!
Alternatively, you can also choose to take a dip at SODA, an outdoor jacuzzi that’s free for all hotel guests to use! We already had a soak in our room’s bathtub, and chose to lounge on the sunbeds instead
The Scarlet Singapore’s welcome gift caught us by surprise. Unlike other hotels, we didn’t receive body lotion or boxes of chocolate. Instead, we were presented with a… Back-Scratcher. Accompanied with a note that says, “Mmm… let me caress your back tonight”. The back-scratcher is included for all stays in the Premium Rooms and Suites. What a quirky memento to bring home!
Did you know that this quaint row of 13 shophouses, where The Scarlet Singapore sits, was awarded the 2005 Architectural Heritage Award for conserving and refurbishing the Early Style shophouses? No wonder its exterior is so enchanting!
The check-in process was a breeze. We were even given a refreshing mocktail to sip on whilst the helpful staff checked our paperwork!
Just two train stops away from Telok Ayer, Marina Bay is the place where you can enjoy a slow romantic walk along the Waterfront Promenade with your sweetheart! There are so many things to do in the Marina Bay area – step into a fantasy world at ArtScience Museum or admire the illuminated Helix Bridge. However, if you’re in a festive mood, head down to Singapore’s largest carnival, Marina Bay Prudential Carnival, which offers a dazzling array of over 40 rides and countless stalls. Do note that this carnival is only available till 1st April 2018, so do head down when you can!
Located just five minutes by foot away from The Scarlet Singapore, Ann Siang Hill is tucked into a darling corner of Chinatown, and is surrounded by an array of brightly painted shophouses. Filled with cafés and bars, Ann Siang Hill is also home to a small park that offers a breath of fresh air amidst the city.
You can never get hungry during your stay in The Scarlet Singapore, simply because it’s surrounded with good food in every direction! Amoy Street Food Centre is located just around the corner, allowing you to indulge cravings at anytime of the day (and night!). There are plenty of notable stalls, but our favourite is the Teochew Beef Kway Teow. We also recommend bringing a couple of Curry Puffs back to your room for a late night snack!
