When we hear of Indonesia, its stunning romantic beaches, mystical forests and majestic peaks immediately come to mind. But through all the country’s natural wonders, are impressive cultural landmarks that have stood the test of time. While we found plenty of options from our research, the traditional city of Solo caught our attention the most, and it wasn’t long before we decided to stay at one of its most sought-after hotels, Alila Solo. We imagined staying in a modern luxury hotel sitting in the middle of a traditional city to be an interesting combination, and we weren’t disappointed.
A mere 15-minute drive from Adi Sumarmo International Airport, Alila Solo is the tallest building in Central Java. It proves that something as luxurious can exist even in a place that heavily values tradition and culture. Arriving here, we immediately took notice of the avant-garde facilities, fine architecture and designs, and the incredibly attentive staff.
Every time we finished our daily activities in and outside the city, we’d always make sure to climb up to the rooftop to relax or lounge at the hotel’s massive swimming pool, which gave us the feeling of being in a resort. Otherwise, we would be enjoying a private time in our cosy bedrooms, which are simply remarkable, to put it mildly. As up-to-date travellers, we also appreciated the newspapers the staff would deliver to us every day and the fast WiFi connection, which was really convenient as we had to stay connected with colleagues, our families and occasionally share trip photos on social media.
If you ever wander around this side of Indonesia, make sure to check out Alila Solo for a cultural yet luxurious stay.

Do you know that Alila literally means “surprise” in Sanskrit? Any guest, even the most experienced ones, will likely be awed by the refreshing atmosphere of the hotel despite its location in the middle of a city. It’s also surprising and remarkable how Alila Solo managed to incorporate innovative and luxurious designs rather than going with the traditional vibe of Solo, which is something we don’t encounter often in other hotels.
Being in Indonesia’s centre of tradition and culture, Alila Solo ensures that it doesn’t lose its commitment to environmental sustainability in the process of satisfying its guests. The hotel actually makes use of several environmentally sustainable design (ESD) measures such as using recycled materials, Javanese plants, wastewater management system and measured work practices during its construction. It also strictly adheres to EarthCheck standards and generously supports the Yayasan Pemeliharaan Anak dan Bayi Permata Hati Foundation, which takes care of housing, education and health needs of orphaned, abandoned and rejected babies and children up to five years old in Solo.
Alila Solo is located in the main commercial avenue of Jalan Slamet Riyadi in Solo, Jawa Tengah, Indonesia. It is about a five-minute drive to and from Adi Sumarmo International Airport. You can avail of the hotel’s airport shuttle service for a fee for the fastest and most convenient transfer, especially if you’re travelling as a family. You also have the option to hire a taxi or rent a car upon arriving at the airport. Moving on foot from one place to the other within the city is easy enough for any traveller as the hotel lies just a few minutes away from Solo’s major attractions.
With Alila Solo’s central location, getting around the city and to surrounding places is pretty convenient. Nearby attractions and landmarks include the Purwosari Station, Kampoeng Batik Laweyan, Solo Paragon Lifestyle Mall, Radya Museum Library, Mangkunegaran Palace and Nakamura Klinik, all of which are no more than three kilometres away.
Going a bit further, you will find the Museum Batik Danar Hadi, National Press Monument, Ngarsopuro Market, Klewer Market, Gede Market Solo and The Park Solo, which are also highly rated attractions in the city for historical and sightseeing tours.
