When translated into English, Damai means “peace,” and one can expect no less at this resort, which definitely stays true to its namesake. Situated off the northern coast of Bali, the studios and villas at The Damai are beautiful, alluring spaces that overlook a panorama of the coastal area and seascape. The only sounds you hear will be the sound of the waves lulling you to sleep. On a hill above the Bali Sea, The Damai’s fifteen superbly furnished havens ensure that guests luxuriate in rooms that are tastefully ornamented yet also breezy and comfortable.
From the moment we reached The Damai, we were sold on the gorgeous interior of the resort. With a lush tropical vibe and decorated with numerous traditional Balinese antiques, the cosy reception area and extremely friendly, welcoming staff made us feel right at home here in Bali. We truly appreciated the excellent service as we were ushered by our butler to our gorgeous villa that even had a fresh fruit basket waiting for us.
The Damai makes you feel right at home with their comfortable villas yet its excellent service and facilities ensure that you are still pampered and treated like royalty. We really enjoyed ourselves and are absolutely positive that you would love your stay here, too!
Nestled amongst lush, green gardens, the 68 sqm Balinese style Garden Villa boasts beautifully crafted hardwood furniture and traditional Balinese antiques which created a simple yet elegant living space. Aside from the extremely comfortable bedroom, there is a lounge area which had the comfiest lounge sofa ever. For those who need to quickly get some work done, the lounge area even has a work corner fitted with a desk for writing or reading! There is a veranda as well, which is a perfect space for just chilling out and relaxing together over a cup of coffee. We also enjoyed the delightful semi-outdoor bathroom with open air showers! This is certainly a perfect space for two!
At 68 sqm, the Seaview Villa is similar to the Garden Villa but it gave us an enchanting view of the North Bali Sea. Similarly furnished with elegant traditional Balinese ornaments around the room as well as having a lounge space and veranda, this villa has an en-suite open air bathroom with open air showers and a bathtub for soaking in after a long day. The best part of this villa is, of course, the seaview itself. We thoroughly relished the opportunity of waking up to stunning views every morning. Having breakfast on the large, spacious veranda that overlooked the sea while watching the sun rise over the ocean was just simply breathtaking. A comfortable room with the best views?! We would take this villa any day!
If you cannot decide between the Garden Villa and the Seaview Villa, we suggest that you go for the Pool Studio. Enjoy the best of both worlds as it is surrounded by lush gardens along with a view of the sea as well! At 110 sqm, the Pool Studio is spacious and equally well-furnished with hardwood ceilings and vibrant fabrics. The best part about it is its very own private swimming pool! Amidst the lush greenery, we were able to wade around and relax in while enjoying the peace and tranquillity. Much time was spent lounging around our expansive bale pavilion in quiet contemplation and reflection. The veranda was perfect for having afternoon tea as it caught the fragrant breeze. Our favourite activity was to laze around out on the veranda after dinner while waiting for the sun to set. Watching the riot of colours across the sky over the sea was almost magical. The Pool Studio felt like our own little piece of paradise – one that we never want to leave!
The Pool Villa units range in size, from 145 to 195 square metres, perfect for a group of friends or a small family. While it is surrounded by greenery, it also offers guests the luxury of a seaview. We enjoyed the ensuite lounge as we could all cosy up and spend time together in a common area, relaxing and chatting together, or even sharing snacks and laughs while we dipped our feet into the pool which was just adjacent to the lounge. We especially enjoyed going for a night swim under the stars before turning in. Being able to spend a few uninterrupted and quiet moments under the night sky together with friends was indeed precious to us! It was a night we would always cherish and never forget. If you and your crew need the perfect getaway for some peace and quiet while enjoying the company of each other, then this place is undoubtedly ideal for you!
At a whopping 300 sqm, the Master Pool Villa is the epitome of luxury and comfort. This villa has two bedrooms, with each being fully equipped with its own bathroom, bath tub and open air shower! We think that this villa would be perfect for a family vacation. The best part? Nobody has to fight over the bath tub anymore!
With tastefully outfitted hardwood ceilings, a gorgeously decorated interior and a large connecting lounge, this room wowed us off our feet! But it gets even better! The Master Pool Villa has two verandas with a seaview, each having their own private bale pavilion and swimming pool! With two swimming pools, mum and dad can use one for relaxing in while the kids splash and frolic in the other. In addition, The Damai also offers babysitting services so parents can finally check off that long awaited dinner date! With such luxuries, this villa undeniably made us feel like royalty!
The restaurant at the Damai prides itself in only serving up meals from local ingredients. Herbs, fruits and vegetables come from their own market garden, meats and shellfish from their own boutique farm, fresh fish from local fisherman and eggs and poultry from their village. With that in mind, we had high expectations for the meals we were about to have and we were not disappointed! It was an absolute gastronomical experience as we dined by candlelight. It was truly a wonderful experience as we enjoyed the fresh, flavourful dishes served to us. A romantic dinner with delicious food accompanied with a glass of wine – we cannot think of a perfect way to end the day!
See Bali through the eyes of a local by going on a unique excursion to see and experience the sights and sounds of the northern region of this beautiful island! There are many exciting activities that you can do around your hotel and we totally recommend visiting Lovina where you can visit the dolphin safari!
We woke up early to catch the sunrise at Lovina Bay, where we were lucky enough to also spot a pod of dolphins hunting for tuna! Our guide told us that the fishermen follow dolphins because dolphins help lead them to their tuna fish catch! We also decided to visit some of the beautiful temples which surrounded the area, and our favourite was the Temple of the Lake Goddess. We took some time gazing at the majestic structure that sat squarely in the middle of a peaceful, tranquil lake before heading to the park nearby to have our picnic lunch! The resort offers a variety of tours and picnics to the surrounding attractions so you can customise a tour according to your wishes and maximise your time!
Going for a massage at The Spa at Damai was a truly luxuriating experience! All our aches and pains from our hiking and outdoor activities instantly melted away as trained therapists used traditional Balinese massage and healing philosophies to help relax our bodies. Get ready to be pampered with the various treatments on offer which include both traditional Asian and modern Western techniques, using natural and organic products! We emerged from the spa feeling ultimately rejuvenated and even treated ourselves to a manicure and pedicure since they also offer a range of beauty, skin and nail treatments! The staff and their amazing spa therapies made sure that we were pampered enough. Did you know that the treatments here were once only for the use of the royal family? No wonder we felt like real royalties here!
Bali is known as “The Island of A Thousand Temples” and it comes to no surprise that even in the northern region, temples are found almost everywhere for people to visit and admire. The Damai has a few gorgeous temples around its grounds for you to explore. Marvel at the traditional Balinese architecture of the Ulun Danu Temple on Lake Beratan and the Temple of The Lake Goddess! Be sure to check them out when you are in the area, for they prove to be lovely photo backdrops.
The ingredients used in the meals you have when you dine at the restaurants all come from around the region itself! The organic herbs, fruit, and vegetables are grown from their own market garden or from organic highland farms in Bedugul, and the meat and shellfish are all raised from their own boutique farm. Aside from the fish, which they catch fresh every day off the nearby Bali sea, the eggs and poultry are from the adjacent village! Even fresh virgin coconut oil is obtained from the village nearby. With ingredients from sources that you can visit and see with your very eyes, rest assured that you are getting the freshest of ingredients in every bite of what you eat!
The Damai certainly feels like a home because it once was one. The resort started as the dream of building a home on a hill in Bali, when a Danish advertising executive passed by this beautiful, unspoilt village in the early 1990's. Today, this dream has grown into a top-notch resort that makes every guest feel just right at home whilst immersing in Bali’s rich culture and natural beauty.
Book your stay directly with The Damai to get the following benefits:
From Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, take a 3-4 hour drive to The Damai. Driving from Ubud will take you 2-3 hours if you go through Bedugul, or 4-5 hours if you take the Kintamani road. The hotel also offers chauffeured transfer to all locations in Bali, so do arrange with the reception for this service.
Everyone travels by car around here as there is not much public transportation available so we recommend hiring a private car and a driver which is proven useful since the locals can also share about their local lifestyle and Balinese traditions! In addition, there is also a free shuttle service to and from Lovina.
There are plenty of things to see and do around the northern region of Bali – from appreciating culture and traditional Balinese structures to taking in the wonders of nature. There are various temples scattered around the area which you can visit and admire. Observe how the Balinese make offerings at the temple and learn why temples are so sacred and important in everyday Balinese lifestyle by speaking to some of the locals if you wish!
Explore the treasures of the area by uncovering beautiful secret waterfalls of North Bali such as Git-Git near Singaraja and Ambengan waterfall which forms into sparkling, crystal pools that are great for swimming in. Don’t forget to bring your towel and a change of clothes! For more sublime views, be sure to take a trip to Munduk, a small farming village located in the vicinity of the highlands, nestled amongst gorgeous coffee plantations and chrysanthemum farms! The lovely scenic views will sweep you off your feet!
Another good place to visit would be Singaraja where you can experience the culture and uncover the histories of Bali’s old kingdoms. Once the proud capital of Bali, Singaraja is just a short drive away from Lovina and holds many tourist attractions. You can opt to visit the bustling food towns to get up close and personal with where the chefs get their produce from, or simply arrange for a tour around the palace where a guide will explain more about the rich history and culture that has left its indelible mark on the modest yet beautiful royal dwellings.
There are also plenty of activities for those who crave for adventure! Try snorkelling or diving in the azure blue waters of the North Bali Sea where you can wade with the various marine life and admire the crystal clear visibility of the waters. Hop over to Tulamben, one of the world’s top 15 dive sites or to the “house reef” in Lovina which offers rich marine life and a comfortable, safe snorkelling environment! From sightseeing to hiking and snorkelling, there is bound to be something for everyone to enjoy!
